Novena for Weight Loss and Spiritual Wellness
Definition
A novena is a traditional Catholic practice of praying for nine consecutive days to seek special graces, intercession, or divine assistance. Rooted in the nine days the Apostles and Mary prayed between Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1:12–2:5), a novena is a period of focused prayer, often involving specific intentions. In this context, the novena is designed to seek God’s guidance and strength for weight loss, integrating physical health with spiritual discipline. The intention is to surrender struggles with food, body image, and health to God’s will, trusting in His transformative power.
Complete Prayers for the Novena
This novena is adapted from the Surrender Novena, inspired by Fr. Dolindo Ruotolo, tailored for weight loss and spiritual wellness. Pray the following each day for nine days, ideally at the same time daily, to maintain consistency.
Daily Prayer Structure:
-
Begin with the Sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
-
Pray the Surrender Prayer (below) 10 times.
-
Conclude with: Hail, Holy Queen and St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us.
Surrender Prayer (Repeat 10 times each day):O Jesus, I surrender my struggles with weight, food, and body image to You. Take care of everything. Guide me to make choices that honor my body as Your temple, and fill me with Your peace and strength.
Hail, Holy Queen:Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
Day 1: Surrendering ControlO Jesus, I surrender my desire to control my weight and health to You. Help me trust in Your plan for my body and soul. Take care of everything.
Day 2: Overcoming TemptationO Jesus, I surrender my cravings and temptations to You. Grant me the strength to choose nourishing foods and resist unhealthy habits. Take care of everything.
Day 3: Healing Body ImageO Jesus, I surrender my insecurities about my body to You. Help me see myself as You see me, fearfully and wonderfully made. Take care of everything.
Day 4: Discipline and PerseveranceO Jesus, I surrender my lack of discipline to You. Instill in me the perseverance to follow through with healthy choices. Take care of everything.
Day 5: Trust in God’s TimingO Jesus, I surrender my impatience with weight loss to You. Teach me to trust Your timing and process. Take care of everything.
Day 6: Gratitude for the BodyO Jesus, I surrender my ingratitude to You. Fill me with thanksgiving for the gift of my body and its ability to heal. Take care of everything.
Day 7: Seeking WisdomO Jesus, I surrender my confusion about health choices to You. Grant me wisdom to discern what is best for my body and soul. Take care of everything.
Day 8: Strength for the JourneyO Jesus, I surrender my weakness to You. Provide me with the fortitude to continue this journey of wellness. Take care of everything.
Day 9: Complete TransformationO Jesus, I surrender my entire self to You. Transform my heart, mind, and body to reflect Your glory and live fully for You. Take care of everything.
